What is the evidence that dna is the hereditary material. Proteins were understood as long complex molecules made up of different amino acids. Any genetic material had to be complex enough to code different material. Pioneering experiments leading to discovery of importance of dna: Smooth (s strain) has polysaccharide coat that gives bacteria ability to counteract immune system of mouse. It is non-virulent and the mouse"s immune system can attack it. Griffith injected live s strain into the mouse. If the s strain bacteria were heat-killed and injected into the mice the mouse should live. He injected live r strain and the mouse lives. He took a mix of live r strain and heat killed s strain and injected and the mouse dies. Conducts an autopsy looking for s strain bacteria living in the mouse. The bacteria had transformed from one form to another. Something from the s strain caused the r strain to transform into the other.
