Do citizens have a right to make good for their country’s historical wrongs?- PRP 20
Yes they do. Who else is going to make good for a country’s historical wrongs except its
citizens? In a country that has a history of killing and oppressing people that are outside of the
norm (white, christian, heterosexual man), there is a lot of repairing that needs to be done. These
wrongs cannot be fixed by one generation of people. For this reason, alone citizens have to
correct these wrongs at any given time in history. Historical wrongs usually have long lasting
effects that follow generations for many years. In the case of slavery in America, there is so
much evidence to show how deep and far-reaching the effects of slavery have been on the black
community. This history has shown itself in policies that oppress black people. The war on
drugs, mass incarceration, police brutality are a few echoes of slavery that still affect black
people till today. Black people today may not have been alive during an active time of picking
cotton on fields or lynchings but we are still being oppressed. Now, although we did not live
through slavery, we still live in a society that allowed for our oppression and the people in that
society have a moral obligation to eradicate these effects. Slavery and segregation gave white
people privileges and oppressed black people. In today’s society, black people are still oppressed
and white people still have certain privileges that allows them progress in society easier than
black people. History has long-lasting effects on generations to come and citizens of that
generation have a moral and civic duty to correct these wrongs and also prevent them from
happening again. It seems that citizens are truly the best shot we have at fixing the wrongs.
