Should groups that have traditionally faced discrimination be given special consideration when
applying to university or employment?
In a country where black people and women were once considered as property and faced
oppression and discrimination, asking for special consideration when applying should be the bare
minimum when taking steps towards equality. The odds have been stacked against these groups
of people in every society and in all spheres of life and doing this should be one way to make
amends. The societies that we live in are constructed and built on the ideologies of white men
which are different from those of women and black people. Women and black people would not
survive in a society that was meant for the advancement of white men without these special
considerations. Diversity is also important in schools and workplaces because they only bring
about more good. There is diversity in thought in religion, thought, culture and sexuality which
are very intangible parts of people’s identities. Gender and Race are immediate identifiers and
are usually the foundation of conversations about diversity. Special considerations do not give
these groups an upper hand; they just give them the privilege, in certain settings, that white men
have had for years. People argue that the people who have these societal advantages have no
control of being born into certain situations. However, these same people are born with the same
privileges that allow them advance them in society with ease. They have no control over their
race or gender but these privileges are also inherent depending on what gender or race you
identify as. People who are born with this privileges are not being forced to be guilty for this but
rather we ask that you use this privilege to uplift others. More importantly, you should be lucky
that women and black people want equality rather than revenge after all these years of
oppression. Affirmative action is merely a band aid solution to the greater issue of systemic
inequality and injustices.
