Document Summary

Reason for action: regard something as worthwhile for itself, for its own sake having eyesight. Both an end-in-itself and a means to an end: friends regard something as a means to some other end: to get somewhere, you take subway, puttng gas in car. The word happiness is a awkward translation for a greek word: eudaimonia - flourishing, well- being, happiness, life at its best all at once. Eudaimonia does not focus on mere subjective feelings of pleasure. Aristotle is drawing an inspiration: his father was a doctor. There is such a thing as well being for a whole human life. What does happiness consist of: intellectual virtues: excellences. Theoretical wisdom (contemplation) some sort of higher learning is excellent. Practical wisdom (moral reasoning) this is a skill that takes practice. This is why we may need advice from those more experienced: character virtues/moral virtue. Lists lots of these sorts of virtues: courage, moderation (self-control)
