Document Summary
Part i of the reading talks about property distribuion laws pre-1980 reforms. Before 1980, new york law only allowed the spouses to have property that was already in his or her name, meaning that men usually got everything and women got nothing. When wives got inancial support, it was through alimony payments, which weren"t awarded frequently and were paid even less. There was conlict when passing the law over whether the distribuion should be literally 50/50 or fair . Orr v. orr was what eventually prompted the nys legislature to pass these law changes. This bill also established the idea of marriage as an economic partnership. Part ii deals with the results of the task force report. it was established to examine the courts and idenify gender bias and, if found, make recommendaions for its alleviaion. It was made of 23 people (judges, law professors, lawyers, and legislators) and took almost 2 years to complete.
