The medical model proposes that it is useful to think of abnormal behaviors as a disease. Living conditions in early asylums were deplorable. Common treatments: utica crib, restraint chair, muffs, ankle cuffs. Medical diagnoses of abnormal behavior put potentially derogatory labels on people. Social stigma of mental illness (even after full recovery) Disease or illness can only affect the body . Personal distress: feelings of pain and suffering. Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (dsm) first published in 1952. Key dsm 5 changes (2013) included reorganization of disorders into new categories on the basis of presumed etiological characteristics and movement toward dimensional conceptualization of disorders. The dsm 5 no longer uses this multi-axial coding system. Dsm 5 criticized by some for lower diagnostic thresholds (dr. allen frances) Many disorders often occur together (comorbidity) and may therefore reflect variations of the same underlying disorder. Prevalence: the percentage of the population exhibiting a disorder during a specific time period.
