About 2-8% of adolescents are chronically depressed. Females 2x as likely to be depressed as males. Supporting evidence: adolescents of either gender who identify more with. Can influence neurotransmitter levels, hormonal responses to stress. Having friends with depressive symptoms is linked to a rise in own depressive symptoms (co-rumination) Rate increases throughout lifespan; sharp jump at adolescence. Boys are 3-4x as likely to commit suicide. Girls make more unsuccessful attempts (ex. pill overdose) Black and hispanic teens have lower suicide rates than white teens, but the rate is increasing for black male youths. Native american youths have the highest rate, 2-6x national average. Also high rates of poverty, substance use, poor school performance, Lgbt youths also at high risk (3x as likely to attempt) depression in these communities. Often less support, more conflict and victimization from family and peers. Often have family history of poor mental health. Likely to have experienced multiple stressful life events.
