Overwhelmingly dominant force in europe starting 1500s- long way to go. Martin luther germany 1520s catholic priest of the augustinian tradition. Didn"t know what he was doing when he started lutheranism by reforming catholicism. Wasn"t planning on starting it but since the reformation wasn"t happening he declared independence from pope. Puritans- huge bother to monarchy huge religious warfare lead the puritans to flee, monarchy was able to get rid of them- the original colonies (eg. maryland) were set up by protestants. New combo of church + state read the book very literally (old testament) What god had given to the jews they thought was a prediction of this new land/world. These colonies were a gift from god- taken seriously. Many remained catholic- calversts, given a deal to settle maryland.
