Document Summary
Humans act through behavior, or speech- do things or say things. The social sciences study action- what people say and do. The natural sciences study things" and movement". The study does not necessarily study action" as a motivated action. The natural sciences have made significant progress, and have a very powerful set of tools that are useful for prediction and control. Maybe we should try to apply natural science techniques to social phenomena- like voting or marriage behavior. Many social scientists look for methods that go towards the natural sciences. Other groups believe that social phenomena are importantly different from the natural sciences, not quite the same as the movement of physical bodies. Option one: look for laws like the natural sciences. Option two: social phenomena are drastically different. Naturalism: makes social sciences analogous natural sciences. Phenomenon (to a social scientist)- an event that is surprising, unexpected, or puzzling.
