Document Summary

Charles taylor- both a philosopher and political scientist. Chapter 7- notion of action being meaningful behavior, meaningful as being rule- governed behavior. Important claim- if we want to understand and action, we need beliefs and desires. But in order to understand an action- even non-verbal, we presuppose having a understanding of the language that the agent would use to describe his or her actions. There is a tight connection between action and language. Will give out a handout- test is next wednesday. Important to read- chapter 13, charles taylor- interpretation and the sciences of man. Contextually- taylor attempting to show it is plausible to use some of the methods that we would use in literary interpretation, in the social sciences. Not only is it plausible, it is necessary. Taylor is building on what we say about interpretativism. However we usually only talk about individuals, he extends it to institutions and societies as a whole.
