● Marriage and Family
○ Marriage:
■ Marriage is a social process, embedded in context of economic exchange

children, living arrangements and family roles.
■ Marriage is also rights and obligations that people have toward each other,
which can include:
● The expectation of sexual relations
● Sharing responsibilities in parenting
● Sharing economic resources
● Incorporating children into your lineage
○ Endogamy: Rule that one must marry only within one’s local community, clan or
tribe.
○ Exogamy: Rule that one must marry outside of one’s local community, clan or
tribe. (must specify what group is meant)
○ Marriage in Canada:

■ Common-law partnerships are common
■ People get married late, usually age 30
■ Birth rate has decreased considerably
○ Anthropological Perspective
■ Marriage is changing and can adjust to religious, political and economic
changes.
■ Marriages can now include same-sex partnership
○ Forms of Marriage
■ Monogamy: Practise of being married to 1 person at a time (most popular)
■ Polygamy: Practise of being married to more than one wife or husband at
a time
○ Bridewealth and Dowry
■ Bridewealth is property or money brought by the husband to his wife on
their marriage. It may be paid in one sum or in installments over a period
of time.
