The custom of marrying outside a community, clan, or tribe. Married to 1 person at a time. Married to 2 or more people at a time. When a man has 2 or more wives at the same time. When a woman has 2 or more husbands at the same time. A payment presented by the bride"s family to that of the groom. Husband goes to live and work with the wife"s family for a period of time. Most resources are passed through the male lineage. Grew in popularity due to religion, law, etc. Means they can trace their descent both through their mother and father. Works particularly well for societies that have small family units.
