BIOL 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Carboxylic Acid, Oligosaccharide, Amine
Document Summary
Carbohydrates- simplest are sugar (glucose is most important to us in this class) glucose, fructose and galactose. Disaccharides and polysaccharides are many of 2 or more sugars. Polysaccharide of glucose is starch and glycogen (used to store glucose) Oligosaccharide- means a short chain of sugars, important in cell attachment and extracellular matrix and sometimes in cell identification. Lipids/ fats- building block is a fatty acid. Can be different by the number of carbons present. Transduction/ elimination of enzymes lycarol: 3 carbon molecule, tack 3 fatty acids. Fat/ glycerides generally for storage of energy. Used to make a phospholipid- (phosphate group on third fatty acid) Is amphipathic and forms a bilayer for cell membranes. Steroids- don"t use fatty acids as subunit. Cholesterol (actually very important and essential for you) if you don"t have enough in your diet, your body will make it in the liver. Bad if you have too high cholesterol. Maybe from diet or because the liver makes it.
