Consume large amounts of food (binge) and then try to purge by fasting, excessive exercise, vomiting and/or taking laxatives. Food intake is controlled by arcuate (arc) and lh nucleus. Together they form part of a negative feedback system. Released by adipose (fat) tissue in proportion to amount of fat in body. Mc4-r is important for decreasing food intake a malfunction leads to obesity. Orexin is the feeding hormone in lh nucleus while npy is the feeding hormone in acruate nucleus. Metabolic syndrome results in hyperlipidemia, diabetes and hypertension. Eating disorders are thought to be a combination of genetic, neurochemical, psycho- developmental and sociocultural factors. The natural pattern of physiological and behavioural processes that are timed to a near 24 hour period. Activity is controlled by biological clock, located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of hypothalamus.
