Document Summary

All matter on earth consists of atoms of substances called elements, each of them unique. Atom = the smallest particle of an element that retains all the properties of that element. Atoms may combine in specific ways to form assemblies called molecules. Molecule = combination of atoms: example: one carbon atom can combine with two oxygen atoms to form a molecule of carbon dioxide. Although many simple molecules form spontaneously, only living things manufacture extremely large and complex molecules. Organisms = bodies of living things that are composed primarily of complex molecules called organic molecules. Organic molecules = contains a framework of carbon to which at least some hydrogen is bound. Cell = the smallest unit of life. Different tissues, in turn, may combine to form organs (the heart, for example): organ = a structure usually composed of several tissue types that form a functional unit. Multicellular organisms often have several organ systems.
