GEOG 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Humus, No Air, Colluvium
Document Summary
Anything that is not bedrock, is soil. A dynamic natural body made up of fine materials covering the earths surface. The thin surface layer of the earth, consisting of closely intermixed mineral in which plants grow, composed of both mineral and organic matter and organic matter in the form of solids, liquids, and gases. Soil mantle basically anything that is not bedrock. Loess sediment that has been transferred and deposited by wind. Alluvium sediment that has been transferred and deposited by water. Till transferred and deposited by glacier ice. Colluvium transferred and deposited by gravitational forces. Abbreviation for the 4 components of soil wamo. Water fills the pores and capillaries until they meet saturation. When the capillaries get really large (due to heavy water), moist soil particles can"t attract. Water that will flow right through a system (soil meeting saturation so the water doesn"t bind the particles anymore) Water that will drain through the soil by gravity (unavailable to plants)
