Long-term memory storage is based on meaning. We tend to remember concepts based on mental representations. Based on the levels of processing model, there are many different types of ways we process information, but the one most conducive to long-term memory storage is semantic processing (dealing with meaning) Schemas are structures in long-term memory that help us perceive, organize, process, and use information. They are based on our past experience. Because culture heavily influences schemas, they can sometimes be unhelpful in novel situations. According to the network model, all information is stored in nodes in our brains, which are interconnected in a vast network. When we activate a node, it activates nearby nodes, and the accumulation of activated nodes makes access to other memories easier. Anything that helps a person recall a memory is a retrieval cue. According to the encoding specificity principle, stimulus encoded along with an experience can later trigger a memory of the experience.
