Document Summary
Parental investment: the time, effort, energy, and risk associated with caring successfully for each offspring. Monogamous mating system: one male, one female. Polyandry: one female, many males (fish, insects, small number of bird species) Polygynandry (promiscuity): all members of the group mate with all other members of the group. Gender roles: cultural expectations about what is appropriate behavior for each gender. For men: achievement; aggression; autonomy; sexuality; stoicism. Women want earning potential, status, ambitiousness, symmetrical face, physical health. Sex differences in parental investment explain mating systems. Each parent does not necessarily make equal parental investment. Have competition for sex with highest parental investment (is usually the female) Sex with highest parental investment more discriminating in mate selection. Women rate men who are interacting positively with the child the highest as a potential mate male attractiveness is enhanced by signs of parental investment and decreased by indifference toward a child in distress.
