PSYCH 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Forego, Operant Conditioning, Selective Mutism
Document Summary
Positive reinforcement: a response is strengthened by the subsequent presentation of a stimulus (reward doesn"t function as positive reinforcement) Negative reinforcement: a response is strengthened by the subsequent removal or avoidance of a stimulus (not punishment) plays a key role in helping us learn to escape from and avoid aversive situations. Operant extinction: the weakening and eventual disappearance of a response b/c it"s no longer reinforced. Resistance to extinction: the degree to which non-reinforced responses persist (strongly influenced by the pattern of reinforcement that has previously maintained the behavior) Positive punishment (aversive punishment): a response is weakened by the subsequent presentation of a stimulus. Punishment suppresses behavior but doesn"t cause the organism to forget how to make the response. Negative punishment: a response is weakened by the subsequent removal of a stimulus (response cost) May arouse temporary frustration but less likely to create strong fear or hatred of the punishing agent.
