Document Summary

Rewards/punishment-we like people who provide us with positive reinforcement. Gain-loss hypothesis-gaining someones esteem is a greater reward(we like people that we have to win over) Reciprocity effects-we like people who like us. Flattery effects-flattery makes us feel good, even if you think its insincere, you want to like the person back. Social exchange theory-we examine the rewards we get and the cost we incur out of interacting with someone, our cognitive assessment of these will weigh in our minds to determine if we like someone or not. We examine these differently if we have one or multiple interactions with someone. Familiarity-if someone reminds us of someone of seems familiar for some reason, we like them more. Physical appearance-a lot of research to support this. Computer dance-incoming freshmen were sent questions to measure personality, attitudes, values. Then during orientation week they told people there was a dance where they would be randomly assigned a date.
