SOC 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Convenience Sampling, Ideal Type, Operational Definition
Document Summary
When researchers begin with a theory and then collect data to test it. When researchers begin with data and then develop a theory. An organized set of interrelated assertions seeking to account for some phenomenon. It is composed of a set of theoretical concepts and assertions about the relationships among those concepts. An abstract idea or theoretical construct usually represented by a word or brief phrase summarizing some meaningful aspect of the real world. Typology- is a classification system typically containing two or more mutually exclusive and exhaustive categories distinguished by on or more conceptual dimensions. Ideal type- used as a model for how something might be, but is not necessarily something that exists or is commonly found. Election polls have sometimes incorrectly predicted election winners due to problems with sampling. Sample is a subset of members of the population rather than the entire population. We study samples with the intention of generalizing the results to the broader population.
