Trying to attain holistic knowledge about a people through the extended ethnographic fieldwork method. Extended participant observer fieldwork, lasts at least a year both to observe a year cycle and to gain proficiency in the language if necessary. Ethnology: the comparison of ethnographies in anthropology for similarities, differences, recurring themes, etc. Doing this is called ethnological work, can be within one culture or cross culture. Linguistic anthropology/anthropological linguistics -- the study of languages in relation to cultures.
