Sudden return of intense ice-age cold lasting for approximately 1300 years. Correlated with significant reduction in numbers of mammoths and mastodons, but may not be related. Didn"t last long enough for beringia to be exposed again. Timed to draining of lake agassiz, most likely based on data. Winnipeg and lake of the woods are two residuals of this lake, similar to the great salt lake but not salty. The size of all the great lake combined, a freshwater lake and fresh water has an impact on the ocean therefore it"s draining may have helped upset the atlantic conveyor belt. However cause and dating are difficult to determine. Timed to possible asteroid strike on north american ice sheet. Could also have done the equivalent of the draining of lake agassiz. The black mat, a layer of what may be dead organic matter which dates to around here and may be due to massive biological death of fauna and flora.
