A reaction to colonization, especially considering how diverse the maya world was, and still is. Archaeologically there are similarities we see but still incredibly diverse. Maya is used to describe the culture, people, etc. but mayan" originally was referring to mostly the languages. Distribution of languages matches distribution of artifacts more or less. Culture givers vs. receivers/borrowers, archaeologically starting to lead more towards the former than it has in the past since the dates for maya sites are starting to get earlier and earlier. Also need to redate the olmec as technology has improved, but they may have gone back and forth between them. Determine mesoamerica archaeologically by the extent of maize cultivation as the main food source north and south. For the maya, calendars, temple complexes, ball games, their writing, astronomy, human sacrifice, polytheistic religion, associations between directions colors and gods.
