ANTH 383 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Categorical Variable, Central Tendency, Railways Act 1921
Document Summary
Note: for each week of theory readings submit a 500 word max response to the readings, printed and double spaced, one of these will be graded, also you present on one of the theory readings. Output window in spss is used for when doing tests like creating graphs, etc. Rows (horizontal): each spearhead is an item in archaeological terms and a case in statistical terms. Columns (vertical): archaeological attributes, statistical variables, enclosed in <> Variables can be measured at four levels, from least statistically useful to most statistically useful: nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio (noir) Nominal variables: mutually exclusive data that are named, and are not spaced on any sort of scale or ranked. Spss calls these categorical data, which along with ordinal data is also called qualitative data. Can be dichotomous or non-dichotomous, there are a limited number of them and because of this you can only really count them.
