Document Summary

Lecture #7: acids and bases in organic chemistry. Br nsted lowry acids and bases: acid = proton donor/loser, base = proton acceptor/gainer. Chemical reactions: same rules as resonance (can only move pi bonds and electrons) but now you can also move the sigma bonds. Moving sigma bonds means we can now make and break bonds, as well as moving atoms. Acids and bases: bases form conjugate acids, acids form conjugate bases. Acids and bases in water: strong acid in water completely dissociates and water acts as the base. Makes h o : strong base in water completely dissociates and water acts as the acid. Keq = constant at equilibrium: equation = products/reactants, large keq means the reaction favors product. a small keq means that the equation favors the reactants, a keq of one means neither one is favored. Using curved arrows in illustrating reactions: curved arrows show the direction of electron ow in a reaction mechanism.
