Author of 37 plays, generally designated as comedy (17), tragedy (10), history (10) Quarto vs. folio: different versions of the plays. Richard ii + iii, henry iv + v + vi + vii. Nordic saga amleth: amleth must avenge the murder of his father by his uncle fang. Fang has also married amleths mother: this is the obvious source for hamlet. Conventions: 5 acts, double plots, soliloquies, asides: allowed 2 characters to exchange dialogue not intended for other characters to hear, ending couplets: two lines that rhyme and end a scene, plays usually ended with public resolution of conflict.
