So far, the focus of the course has been developing equations for normal and shear stresses in bars under uniaxial or torsional loading. These equations have been exclusively for the stresses acting on cross-sections, but as we have seen, different (sometimes larger) stresses can be found on inclined sections. We have developed some specific equations for stresses on inclined sections for uniaxial loading and pure shear, but we would like to be able to generalize. If we consider the stresses in bars under uniaxial loading, we can identify a common thread in all the cases we have examined, stresses have occurred in a single plane (i. e. , the x-y plane). This is exemplified by the fact that we have relied mainly on 2-d diagrams and equations of equilibrium, and have been able to ignore effects in the z-direction. All of these situations fall under a general stress state called plane stress.
