World was not prepared for what modern industrial arms would do to humanity/tons of people. (cid:1) Europe profound historical memory of wwi, (unlike u. s. ). (tons of monuments with huge names, continual for wwii). (cid:1) U. s. stayed out of the war until 1917 (most of the war weren"t fighting, way americans wanted it). When they did get involved went in with tremendous sense of idealism, changing world for better. Out with old world, in with new world. Europe since napoleonic wars had been pretty much in peace (about 100 years). Then right in middle of american"s progressive era this happens. Shocked with speed with which it happened, disgusted with whole deal.
