HIST 2112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Betty Friedan, Awk, Black Nationalism
Document Summary
Our big history question: (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) When do people rise up against the political system: desperation, rising expectations. Nationalism against idea that blacks and whites work together to make a happy community. White society never going to let you in as an equal, need to move towards platform of racial self-sufficiency and self determination. Cultural nationalism too (soul train and the afro and kwanza). Kwanza creation of 1965 & l. a. and the black naturalist cultural wing. Additionally a redefinition of what a race riot meant. After "65 you had the ghettos of america every summer going up in flames (youth police conflict). Tremendous chilling effect on civil rights movement. Suddenly civil rights leaders are dead and sncc goes black power instead of black and white unite. Orange was activist soccer moms, middle class white. Late 1960s (college women/young women) decide too slow, too old fashioned.
