Surveillance and data collection can be positive or negative depending on your perspective. Surveillance: in 1948 george orwell published a book called 1984; ubiquitously collect data in his novel for information, control, manipulation and for surveillance. The book emphasized the idea that there is no place to hide. In the real 1984, the two major soviet studies centers in the u. s. held a joint symposium on what was going on in the soviet union. In 1984, the us was doing better technologically in terms of data collection and surveillance comparing to the soviet union. In 32 years since 1984, the world progressed in development and diffusion of the information technology. How a number of the information technologies changed and how they have come together? (and supporting the ubiquitous data collection?) Digital storage: all of you have thumb drive or memory stick. We get lots of memory into smaller volume. Digital storage was the first of nano technology.
