Britain lost interest in staying in israel by 1947: no oil, no strategic importance, continual conflicts. Britain decided to try to broker a peace between arabs and israelis while ending their own presence in the area. United nations resolution: establish a jewish state and an arab state in israel. Jews were happy with the resolution: arab league rejected the resolution. Establishment of the state was followed by : attacks from all of its arab neighbors, the attacks ended in no gains for either sides, cease-fire was brokered within a year. Jordan captured the west bank including east jerusalem. Nasser (egypt) nationalized the suez canal and cut off all shipping to israel. Uk still had possessions such as hong kong and australia. France had lost most of its asian holdings but still had holdings in madagascar: both england and france had interests in the suez canal.
