Depth of Development;
Really important and dense area in psychology because every ability you’ve had to develop and
continue to develop in the course of your lifespan!
Important life events: Biological & Non-biological
Cognitive Development
o Biological
o Strategies (hints and short-cuts)
o Brain development (what happens at what times in our life)
Jean Piaget
- MOST influential theory of cognitive development.
- Based on children being explorers of their environment.

Assimilation is the process of interpreting NEW information in light of old
ideas (schemas.)
Learn new information with out changing how you think of the
object or class of objects.
Accommodation is the process modifying old ideas (schemas) to fit new
situations.
A new object is presented, and you have to change your previous
thought about it.
Jean Piaget’s 4 Stages of Cognitive Development: “How were they learning?”
Sensorimotor: (birth-2 years)
Basic motor abilities and reflexes.
(Reaching, crawling, sucking…)
Biggest obstacle is “Object Permeance”
which is the realization that an object
continues to exist even if it can’t be seen.
Preoperational: (2-7 years)
Language!
(Make believe play emerges and question
asking.)
Biggest obstacles are “Centration” which is
the ability to focus on a single aspect of a
situation. “Irreversibility” which means
they’re unable to mentally ‘undo’ an action.
“Focus on appearance” which means that
things look a certain way has to be that way.
“Egocentrism” is the failure to understand the
world appears differently to everyone.
- Conservation is the logical reasoning
that some physical characteristics stay
the same even when their outward
appearance changes.
