To understand the perspective of all the groups and to know more about how they relate to each other. To understand the background and history of the situation as well as current events. Conflict mapping: a visual technique for showing the relationship between parties in conflict. Purpose: understand the situation better; to see more clearly the relationship between parties; to find where allies or potential allies are. When is it used: early in conflict, or later to identify possible entry. Abc triangle: based on the premise that conflict has three major components. Behavior (ex. riots, bombings, mass imprisonment, denial of human rights) Attitude (ex. fear of losing power, resentment about historical wrongdoings, negative stereotypes, ethnic or religious hatred) Context (ex. unjust land ownership, lack of jobs/opportunities, scare resources, unequal political representation)
