Causes for the revolution: french government had terrible debt mostly caused by the american revolution and was very corrupt and backwards, part of the problem is french king louis xvi. Very unpopular because of his wife marie antoinette. When she heard peasants were starving from having no bread she suggested that they eat cake. No proof of her saying this, but she was very unpopular nonetheless. No french, but austrian (on again off again enemy with france: 1788-1789 terrible conditions in the french countryside. Drought, hunger, starvation, 4/5 of the population is peasants.
