Document Summary

Ethnocentrism = the assumption that your particular perspective is universal or universally better: includes idea that world music is different that western music, includes earthy natural materials like bongos! ugh, i hate this class sometimes. World music evolved from record store genre in 80"s business term rather than scholastic. The way people categorize the world tells more about classifier than the thing being classified: ie, people who like bob dylan and people who don"t. Cultural evolutionism = theory that cultures evolve in a single continuum in the same direction: primitive modern, simple complex, worse better (implicit) Definition issues: doesn"t work this way, racist, etc. Changed in 60"s because holocaust and wwii (huh???) Term world music is ethnocentric by original definition of not western . Rousseau: music is the art of combining tones in a manner pleasing to the ear . Stokes: music is what any social group considers it to be : aka, music is a culturally constructed activity.
