Central notion: access eg access to persons or to information about them. Individuals have privacy to the degree that there are zones of inaccessibility surrounding them or their information. A zone of inaccessibility is a physical space or area of information concerning which one has control over who gets access to it. note: this does not require actually being alone or keeping anything secret. There is an apparent tension between privacy and some public goods. Too much privacy could allow individuals to keep areas or information private when it would be good for others to have access to those areas or information (e. g. , information about criminal background for certain jobs. ) Privacy allows us to be ourselves , let our guard down. Privacy allows for a kind of relaxation good for psychological health. Privacy seems to allow for different types of interpersonal relationships. Privacy allows people to plan and carry out illegal activities.
