111 views4 pages

Document Summary

Role: a position in society governed by a set of norms (expectations for behavior) If you have multiple roles then you also have multiple norms for which you are expected to adhere. This poses a potential for role conflict. This also poses the potential for resources from one role to offer resources to alleviate the stress from another role. The differences in the kinds of roles that women and men posses explain sex differences in help. For example: men are more likely to possess a paid worker role than women and a paid worker role is associated with good mental health therefore women may suffer poorer mental health when compared to men. Roles have different effects on health for women and men. For example: if parenthood is more significant for women than men then difficulties with children are more strongly related to the mental health of the mother than the father.
