This tradition is important because it is the entire reason that jews follow the law. It also allows the jews to survive negative events throughout history, because they can take solace in the idea that god is there for them. The covenantal relationship allows the jews to survive. The covenantal relationship is an ongoing faithfulness between jews and god. After negative events, jews appeal to god and feel sustained by the covenantal relationship.
