When the subject is singular, the verb will be singular. Most singular verbs will have an s at the end, but not all. When the subject is plural, the verb will be plural. Collective nouns can have a singular or plural verb, depending on how it is used. Some collective nouns: team, group, and class. What are the three categories for indefinite pronouns: pronouns that have singular verbs. Examples: everybody, everyone, everything, nobody, nothing, something, somebody, someone, anybody, each, either, neither, etc: pronouns that have plural verbs. Examples: many, several, and few: pronouns that can have singular or plural verbs. Most times, compound subjects joined by and will have a plural verb. If the compound subjects are used as one subject, then it will have a singular verb. When subjects are joined by or , neither , not only , etc. , you must use the subject that is closest to the verb to determine if it will singular or plural.
