Document Summary

Fundamental principles of the metaphysics of morals (kant) The will is the faculty in us that recognizes rules and reasons and directs our actions. As human beings, we can understand rules and laws that we must abide by, unlike non-human animals. Non-human animals on the other hand, act based off instincts. Example- a human being knows they can go to jail for killing someone. A non-human animal will kill other non-human animals for survival, that feature is programmed in them to hunt and kill. The good will is the one that recognizes the moral law and always acts from duty (from respect for the moral law). Nothing can possibly be conceived in the world, or even out of it, which can be called good without qualification, except a good will (kant 94). Having a good will not only means understanding rules and laws, but it also implies that a person acts from duty.
