Political parties are not in the constitution ( factions ) Parties arose under washington led by jefferson and hamilton. Party realignments: durable shift of voter party allegiances. Some causes of partisan realignment: slavery (1840s and 1850s, great depression (1930s, civil rights (1960s and 1970s) Two party system: most american believe we should get a third party. If third parties rarely win elections, what influence do they have: they raise new issues. Present new idea when the other two parties stuck: mobilize new voters; people might not vote if there are no third party, hold major parties accountable, serve as a safety valve .
