Document Summary

Greetz defines religion as one order made to be thought of as facts. Therefore to define religion one needs a definition that problematizes what religion can be defined as because a definition of religion has to be able to include everything from practices to communities to people. Do they work as a community : discourse, practice, community. Maxamilist-religion should control all aspects of life. Minimalist- metaphysical concern only, state should not intrude in religion. Prennialist- all religions share something in common. 1. that people try and make sense of the world through religion: people without myths and rituals have a problem because no sacred space means no meaning which therefore means an existential problem. What is our place in the cosmos: sacred place vs profane space sacred place- the divine broke into the mundane world and this is where communication with the divine is possible.
