Document Summary

9 chemical change or net ionic equations (c&p 4th ed. and 5th ed. and 6th ed. ) Some compounds stay together when dissolved in water, some become ions (look at chart to figure out) The main point of this chapter: when some ionic compounds are put into water, they dissolve by separating into their component ions. These ions are totally separate from each other. One ion can react with something while the other ion does nothing. In terms of the way the body works, blood and cytosol are mostly water so many compounds in the body separate to ions and function as such. Sodium ion is what is commonly called sodium when you hear about low- sodium diets. (high sodium ion is associated with a greater risk of heart attack. ) A less obvious but really important point in this chapter is the idea of acids that dissolve completely to ions (called strong ) or only dissolve partially to ions (called weak).
