Using soap and warm water on washcloth, cleanse the tip of the penis from the urinary meatus down, using a circular motion. Instruct resident to void, allowing first part of urine to escape (cid:327). (cid:328). (cid:328). Allow the last portion of the urine stream to escape. I/o is being monitored, or if amount of urine passed must be measured, catch the first and last part of the urine in bedpan or urinal. Place the sterile csp on the urine container immediately to prevent contamination of the urine specimen. (cid:329). (cid:330). With the cap securely tightened, wash outside of specimen container (cid:332). Offer opportunity for resident to wash hands (cid:332). (cid:328). Use tongue blade to remove specimen, place in specimen container (cid:332). (cid:329). Cover container, make sure lid is secure (cid:334). Write resident"s name on specimen container label: take specimen to nurse or designated area (cid:327)(cid:326). Report to nurse that specimen that has been collected, and any observations.
