ANTH 1002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Turkish Cuisine, Penn Avenue, Ecological Relationship
Document Summary
Polish guy that taught at university of chicago. Not very interested in history, since history is very speculative and not as much empirical. Need to examine if anthropologist is interested in synchronic history or trends over time in history. Instead of saying how he"s going to study how cultural functions reproduce themselves, wanted to examine more abstract concepts like notion of time and spatial awareness. Ecological: time in relation to the earth, e. g. seasons, monsoon, etc. Structural: time that is told in terms of relations between humans, as opposed to hours/days. There is a distance of time that occurs between two individuals between the same individual (i. e. we are 3 generations apart) Notions of time and space are not based on objective measurements, they are based on cultural constructs. The way in which we think about the world is based on the social reference/social context we found ourselves in. Meet someone from california, tell them you live in dc.
