Stress- negative feelings that arise whenever people feel unable to cope with demands from their environment. Imminent events requiring strong demands: ambiguous, uncontrollable, unpredictable events, physiological measures of stress, blood pressure, respiration rate, hormone levels, fight-or-flight response- responding to a stressor by either attacking it or fleeing from it. Tendency to respond in a specific way can make the body more vulnerable (being more type a, etc. : cohen study- healthy participants filled out a questionnaire. They were given nasal drips of either saline or a solution containing the common cold. Internal/external- refers to whether or not a person believes that they have control or influence over events. Overall, men who explained negative events with stable, global, internal causes at 25 were less healthy later in life. Learned helplessness- feelings of loss of control as outcomes are perceived as independent of behavior.
