SPHR 2107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Acoustic Theory, Vocal Tract, Transfer Function
Document Summary
Much of the model is based on fant (1960) Major premise - important physical laws and relationships unify the various elements of the vocal tract. A function f takes an input x, and returns a single output f(x). One metaphor describes the function as a "machine" or "black box" that for each input returns a corresponding output. The source for a vowel is: normally produced by the larynx, complex, periodic, all of the above. The source for vowels is: normally produced by the larynx complex quasi- or pseudo- periodic. The filter in the source-filter theory: created by the larynx, is the result of how we shape the vocal tract, is affected by how sound is filtered leaving the mouth, b&c. Result of how we shape the vocal tract above the larynx. Is due to the characteristics of the resonant tube. Is due to the sound leaving the tube through the lips. Is often considered part of the transfer function.
