PSY 011 Lecture 14: Psych Antecedent Manipulations 14
Document Summary
A functional assessment is designed to determine the antecedents and consequences of both desirable and undesirable behaviors. antecedent manipulation (antecedent control procedure): antecedent stimuli are identi ed and manipulated in order to promote the expression of desirable behaviors. These stimuli can be any aspect of the social or physical environment that can be present to evoke a desirable behavior. The expression of these desirable behaviors can then be differentially reinforced in contrast to problem behaviors. Undesirable behaviors will therefore ideally decrease if being posed up against the antecedents the come to elicit desirable behaviors. Behaviors require discriminative stimuli and s-delta stimuli in order for an individual to know when a behavior is deemed acceptable and thus is going to be reinforced. If the discriminative stimuli for a certain behavior are presented, a type of antecedent manipulation, the behavior will be more likely to follow because the right social or environmental conditions are being arranged.
