HPR 010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Automated External Defibrillator, Cardiac Arrhythmia, Ventricular Fibrillation
Chapter 6 – Automated External Defibrillation 10/1/17
Public Access Defibrillation
- A perso’s hae of surial draatiall iproes through earl ardiopuloar resusitatio
(CPR) and early defibrillation with the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- AED must be used in the first few minutes to be effective, and they are available in many public
places.
How the Heart Works
- An organ with four hollow chambers
o Two chambers on the right and two on the
left
- Has a unique electrical system
- Contracts approximately every second →needs an
abundant supply of oxygen, which it gets through
the coronary arteries that run along the outside of
the heart muscle and branch into smaller vessels.
- Why Normal Electrical Activity is Interrupted
o Ventricular fibrillation (v-fib)
▪ Is the most common abnormal heart rhythm in cases of sudden cardiacc arrest in
adults
▪ The organized wave of electrical impulses that cause the heart muscle to contract
and relax in a regular fashion is lost when the heart is in V-fib
o Ventricular Tachycardia (V-tach)
▪ Heart beats too fast to pump blood effectively
Care for Cardiac Arrest
- Time is crucial when the heart stops beating, blood stops circulating, and oxygen is cut off
- CPR is the initial care until a defibrillator is available.
About AEDs
- Electronic device – analyzes the heart rhythm, and delivers an electric shock if necessary to correct
one of the abnormal electrical disturbances
- Attahes to perso’s hest by a cable connected to two adhesive pads placed on the perso’s
chest. The cable and pads sends the electrical signal from the heart into the device for analysis
and delivers the electric shock to the person when needed.
- Built-in-rhythm analysis system – determines in the person needs a shock
- Reords perso’s heart rhythm, shock data, and other info
- Common Elements
o On/off mechanism and voice prompts
o Cable and pads
o Analysis capability
o Defibrillation capability
o Prompts
